About Us
The Cyber Safety and Ethics Initiative is a unique non-profit partnership between the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), numerous Rochester area school districts, the Diocese of Rochester Department of Catholic Schools, other higher education institutions and private schools, and regional offices of three national organizations, including:
- The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC)
- Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) Rochester Chapter
- InfraGard Member Alliance (IMA of Rochester), a program of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The mission of the Initiative is to improve cyber safety, security and ethics at the K-12 level, as well as for teachers, parents, employers and other members of the community.
CSEI PLAN FOR ACTION
Phase I – (2006 -2007 school year): COMPLETED
- Organize Initiative
- Pilot RIT Internet and At-risk Behaviors Survey in 5 school districts
- Analysis and public reporting of preliminary findings
- Identify cyber safety/ethics curriculum and teaching resources
- Community awareness
Phase II – (2007 – 2008 school year): IN-PROGRESS
- Complete RIT survey in 10 additional school districts
- Analysis and reporting of final survey findings
- Pilot teacher/staff development in selected school district(s)
- Seek funding to support long-term community development

Facts:
- The Cyber Safety and Ethics Initiative was organized in May 2006 by Dr. Samuel McQuade
- The CSEI has conducted the largest cyber safety and ethics survey of K-12 students in the Nation
- More than 40,000+ students throughout the Rochester area have participated in the survey
- The survey was developed by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in conjunction with Cambria Health Alliance (of Harvard Medical School) Division on Addictions
