“Our children are our greatest resource for the future and without the right level of training the cyber ethics gap is going to continue to expand.” Dr. Samuel C. McQuade, RIT
The Cyber Safety and Ethics Initiative (CSEI) was formed to address the cyber challenges faced by school districts and communities in Monroe County New, York. In the spring of 2007 CSEI initiated the world’s largest cyber research project, which by January of 2008 involved surveying 40,000+ K-12th grade students along with hundreds of parents and teachers.
What distinguishes the CSEI research is:
- Unprecedented scope and scale of survey research, including: (a) urban-bordering, suburban and rural school districts; (b) number and in-depth nature of questions pertaining to online victimization, offending and social computing experiences of youth along with understanding among parents and teachers of ways in which youth use the Internet; and (c) a design capable of supporting household and longitudinal data analysis.
- Findings that:
(a) pertain to every form of known computer abuse and crime issues and can relate this information to respondent demographics in terms of IT and Internet utilization;
(b) assess prominent K-12 educational resources for enhancing student knowledge of Internet safety, information security and cyber ethics;
(c) advance teacher, school official, parent and community-based training; and
(d) inform acceptable computer/IT/Internet use policy formulation by school districts and other entities along with future legislation intended to enhance cybercrime prevention.
